Who said it was cold in Norway?

I'm just coming back from a running race called Oddvar Helleruds Memorial, which is 9.7 km long. It was this evening[1], under a great sun, with about 27 degrees Celsius, perhaps more. It was really hard, but through a so nice natural environment. Sometimes you want to stop some minutes just to enjoy the landscape. But when it's so sunny like this, you are always asking yourself "Who said it was cold in Norway?".

Happy to have finished it.

Notes

[1] In fact yesterday evening, according to the late hour.

Stopping fighting by reading the FM

Since I'm using subversion, I've never really read the FM, because it's so easy to use. Some days ago I discovered one interesting advanced feature. That is the so-called svn propset command, with it's svn:eol-style buddy. Why this one in particular? Because I remember having fought several times in cross-platform projects; the typical case is when one file is edited or created on Microsoft Windows (and so, most of the time with "\r\n" for the end of lines), which is then modified in another operating system like Unix or GNU/Linux: it produce strange output depending on the editor software. Anyway, svn:eol-style is the solution; apply this command over your files:

svn propset svn:eol-style native myFile

and then, the next one who will checkout, will obtain a file with the proper line ending, depending on his operating system; for example "\n" on GNU/Linux and "\r\n" on Microsoft Windows.

Really useful I think.

Transbaie 2008

Strong thoughts

Today, I thought about a friend of mine who is cycling the Styrkeprøven race, also called Den Store Styrkeprøven which means The Great Trial of Strength; this race is 540 km long, starting in Trondheim (Norway), and finishing in Oslo. What special? This distance should be accomplished in one time! He expects to do it in 18 hours. Particularly impressive when thinking about how fast the climatic conditions can change.

Then I also thought to all the runners of the Midnight Sun Marathon, a race in the Arctic city of Tromsø at 70°N. Probably one of the greatest marathon.

The longest day of the year

You probably know that the summer solstice normally occurs on 21st June. But did you know that in 2008 the exact solstice will occur at 23:59 UT on 20th June?
In fact this is the first time since 1896 that it hasn't occurred on 20st June, and since 1975 it hasn't occurred on 21st June[1].

So this will be the longest day, specially in north countries where it's difficult to find dark night ;-) A good occasion to run a nightly race, called St. Hansgaloppen for about 14,5 km in the nature; sounds great.

Notes

[1] In 1975 it was on 22th June.

New Firefox javascript engine

I don't know if you already had the occasion to test the new Firefox 3.0, but I was startled by the speed of the new javascript engine.
Before this latter version, I found Internet Explorer 7.0 javascript engine more quick than the one from Firefox 2.0, but now the trend is totally reversed. You can now really enjoy full javascript website like Gmail; it is so fast to navigate in it.

Good point for Firefox.

Nudes Machine

Some of you are perhaps fans of Radiohead. And perhaps have you heard the last album In Rainbows[1]. Some time ago they launched a remix contest of Nude song, a song from this album. According to one participant, the task wasn't so easy:

This was quite a difficult task for all the electronic musicians that entered, as Nude is in 6/8 timing, and 63bpm. Most music that's played in clubs is around 120bpm and usually 4/4 timing. It's near impossible to mix a waltz beat into a DJ set.

But the result from this latter is really impressive and original. Just enjoy it here.

Through Prendre un café.
